I have just posted a new map I’ve been working on for some time, a “dot map” showing the population distribution of official languages (English, French, or Bilingual) throughout Canada, uploaded here, and embedded below.
Inspired by The Racial Dot Map by the University of Virginia, the language map displays one dot per official language speaker reported by the Statistics Canada 2016 Census of Population. English speakers are coloured red, French in blue, and bilingual speakers green. As dots are semi-transparent, where languages overlap purples or browns may be visible.
The map was developed by randomly distributing the dots within dissemination areas, with a weighting towards building locations. MBTiles were then generated from the results with tippecanoe and displayed with Mapbox GL JS.
